Medan Kitchen
The grandmother on the sign is Siu Chen. That was not an accident.
Our story
Siu Chen cooked for her church community out of her own kitchen first. People asked for more than she could make. Word moved through the Indonesian community in the San Gabriel Valley the way it always does, and in July 2020, at seventy‑five, she opened the shop on Valley Boulevard. She is eighty‑one now, and still cooks. Three generations run the operation.
It is a small operation on purpose. Part kitchen, part deli case, part grocery aisle. You order at the counter, you take it with you, and if the weather is good you eat at one of the tables out front.
One morning
Bungkusan is Indonesian rice wrapped in banana leaves.

Every bungkusan starts the same way: a banana leaf on paper, and rice still warm from the pot.

The special menu
Some of the cooking Siu Chen grew up with does not fit a daily counter. A curry that needs most of a morning on low heat, or a dish that only makes sense cooked in one large batch. So they take turns — one a day, announced ahead so you can come on the day you want it.
